Cultural Perspectives on Healing After a Disaster

This presentation will provide an overview of cultural issues and their impact to disaster and survivor response. Topics include cross-cultural communication, cultural perspectives of health and the impact of folk beliefs, cultural dynamics and how they relate to recovery and wellness.
David Luna is currently the Director of Border Affairs for the Texas Health and Human Services Commission. In this position, which he has held for the past 6 years, he is responsible for the planning and coordination of health and human services for the Texas Mexico Border Region. Mr. Luna also has experience in crisis, disaster response and assisting victims of trauma.
- Frances S. Priester was raised in the segregated South and received her law degree from the University of Buckingham in Buckingham, England in 1984. Misdiagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia for seven years until finding appropriate treatment for bipolar; she now advocates for over 12,000 mental health consumers and their families as the Director of the DC Department of Mental Health's Office of Consumer Affairs.
